Khaybar was a set of well-defended strongholds north of Madinah, and the expedition there in 7 AH did not go quickly.
The reports describe the Prophet ﷺ saying, after a day that had not gone well, that he would give the banner the next day to a man through whom Allah would grant an opening — and that the man loved Allah and His Messenger and was loved by them.
The Companions spent the night wondering who it would be. In the morning the Prophet ﷺ asked for Ali. Ali was suffering badly from his eyes at the time and had to be brought. The banner was given to him.
The episode is one of the most widely transmitted from Khaybar, and it is remembered less for the fighting than for the night before it — a camp full of people quietly hoping to be called.
