Trampling his lameness into Paradise

When the call went out to march to Uhud, Amr ibn al-Jamuh's sons tried to stop him from going. He was lame in one leg, and the exemption from fighting that his condition carried was not in dispute.
He did not accept their word on it and went to the Prophet ﷺ himself to ask permission to fight.
He is reported to have said, in substance, that his sons wanted to keep him from what he hoped would be his path into Paradise — that despite his lameness, he wished to be allowed to go out and trample it underfoot there.
He was given permission, and went out with the army.
He was killed in the fighting at Uhud. Jabir ibn Abdullah, whose own father Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Haram was killed there too, reported afterward that the Prophet ﷺ had the two men placed together in a single grave, saying that they had been close to one another in this life.
