A hundred households

Her tribe had been beaten and its people taken. She was a chief's daughter, which in that situation was worth nothing at all — she had been allotted to a man like anyone else.

What she did first is the part usually skipped over. She negotiated. She agreed a price with the man who held her for her own release, in writing, and then went to the Prophet ﷺ to ask for help meeting it — as a person with a contract, not as a supplicant.

He offered her something else: that he would settle what she owed, and marry her. She agreed.

And then the thing happened that the sources actually remember her for, and it had nothing to do with her.

The Muslims holding captives from Banu al-Mustaliq released them. All of them. The reasoning they gave was blunt and entirely social: these people are now relatives by marriage of the Messenger of Allah, and we are not going to hold them.

So a whole tribe's captives went free, in a single afternoon, because of a marriage.

Aishah's remark about it is the one that has lasted: she knew of no woman who had been a greater blessing to her own people.

It is worth being exact about what this episode does and does not show. It is not a story about someone being rescued. Juwayriyah is the one who moves first, twice — she negotiates, and then she accepts. And the release that followed was not a policy anyone announced; it was a room full of people working out what their own position now required of them, and acting on it without being told.
