Too young to carry a sword

When the Muslims of Madinah went out to fight, boys came with them, hoping to be allowed to stay. Some were sent home.

Zayd ibn Thabit was one of the ones sent home. He was presented, looked at, and judged too young to be any use in a line of men with swords.

It is worth sitting with that for a moment, because it is a small humiliation and a real one. The thing everybody could see was happening, the thing that mattered, was the fighting — and he had been told he was not big enough for it.

What he could do was read and write, at a time and place where most people could not.

So that is what he was put to. He wrote the revelation down as it came. And when he was older, the two occasions on which the written Qur'an had to be handled — gathered under Abu Bakr, then copied under Uthman — both came to him.

The sources record these facts near one another; they do not say that being turned away from the army is what led to the rest. That connection is the reader's to make, and it is worth making carefully. The point is not that the writing was a consolation prize. It is that the most consequential work available at that moment was not the work that looked most important, and the person who ended up doing it was the one nobody thought was ready for anything.
