Before the army went out to Uhud, Abdullah ibn Jahsh is reported to have made a request of Allah rather than of any person.
In substance, he asked to meet a fierce opponent in the fighting the next day — one who would fight him hard, kill him, and then cut off his ears and his nose, so that when he later stood before Allah and was asked why, he could say: for You and Your Messenger. And he asked that Allah then confirm that he had spoken the truth.
The reports say the day went as he had asked. He was killed at Uhud, and his body was found mutilated.
It is worth being careful with a moment like this. The exact wording of the prayer differs between the versions that carry it, and none of it is given here as a direct quotation. What the sources agree on is the shape of it: a request to be tested as hard as the day could test him, not to be spared it.
