Persia, at Nahawand, in the campaign Umar sent against a large gathering of Persian forces.

Umar had grown concerned at reports of a large Persian force massing at Nahawand, and gave the command of the army sent to meet it to An-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin.
Before the fighting began, he is reported to have prayed, asking in substance for the Muslims to be given victory, even if it meant he himself would not live to see it.
The battle that followed was fierce and decisive. An-Nu'man was killed during it, but the army did not break — command passed on, and the fighting continued to a Muslim victory.
He did not live to see the outcome he had prayed for, though by every account it came.
