Life & legacy
Makkah
Fatimah was the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ and Khadijah, and the youngest of their daughters on the usual reckoning.
She grew up inside the opposition rather than at a distance from it. The reports of the Makkan years have her going to her father when he had been abused in public and dealing with it herself, as a girl — which is a small detail and tells you what her childhood was.
Her mother died about three years before the Hijrah. She emigrated to Madinah.
Madinah
She married Ali ibn Abi Talib in Madinah. Their children included Hasan and Husayn.
The household was a poor one and the reports do not soften it: there is a well-known account of her asking her father for help with the work of the house, and being taught words to say instead. She was at Uhud, tending his wounds after the fighting.
She outlived him by about six months, and died in Madinah in 11 AH. The events of the months between are reported and are contested; this record does not narrate them, for the reason given in the dossier.
