Mus'ab came from a wealthy Makkan family and is remembered as having been the most finely dressed young man in the city — the sources single out his clothes and his perfume specifically, because the contrast with what came later is the point of the story.
When he accepted Islam his family cut him off. He was among those who left for Abyssinia during the worst of the persecution.
Sent to Yathrib
Before the Hijrah, a delegation from Yathrib — the town that became Madinah — pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ and asked for someone to come and teach them. Mus'ab was sent.
He is therefore, in a straightforward sense, the person who prepared Madinah. By the time the Prophet ﷺ arrived, there was a Muslim community there to receive him. That did not happen by itself.
He carried the banner at Uhud in 3 AH and was killed in the fighting.
