Life & legacy

Her life

Umm Kulthum was a daughter of the Prophet ﷺ and Khadijah. Before the prophetic mission began, she was engaged, as was her sister Ruqayyah, to one of the two sons of Abu Lahab; both engagements were ended once Abu Lahab turned against the message.

She emigrated to Madinah with the rest of the family. After Ruqayyah died around the time of Badr, she married Uthman ibn Affan, who had been married to her sister.

Beyond these two marriages, the sources report little about her directly. She died in Madinah some years later, in the Prophet's ﷺ lifetime.
