Life & legacy

The delegation

Zayd was chief of the Tayy tribe and known, before Islam, as Zayd al-Khayl — of the horses — for his skill and reputation as a horseman.

In the year the delegations came to Madinah from across Arabia, Zayd travelled with a group representing his tribe to meet the Prophet ﷺ.

The Prophet ﷺ renamed him at that meeting, calling him Zayd al-Khayr, of the good, in place of the name he had carried before.

The road home

Zayd set out to return to his tribe after the meeting in Madinah, and did not complete the journey. The biographical dictionaries agree that he died on the way, without settling further detail such as the exact place or circumstance.

Because the material here is thin next to most other entries in this dataset, the record states only what the classical sources agree on, and does not fill in colour that rests on the modern retelling alone.
